Nine year old Bastian was diagnosed with Phelan McDermid Syndrome; caused by a deletion of the terminal segment of chromosome 22. This causes a developmental delay, and has lead to an absence of Bastian’s speech his whole life. Bastian's Mum, Kat, had been using Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) Cards to communicate with Bastian, however found limitations with this method. Previously, Kat had found newer technological options too expensive, but after applying for charity funding, was able to use ChatAble.
"I applied for charity funding to get Bastian an iPad on which he can run the new ChatAble app. Since then I can only describe the results as a miracle. Bastian is motivated by food and many of his requests relate to food. But we've been able to expand the way he looks at things, describes them and uses adjectives so he can explain exactly what he is seeing and the colours of the food he likes”.
“I love the history feature and being able to change the grids. Being able to search pictures is great. Bastian loves it and we feel we can now have a conversation, impossible in the past”.
Through using ChatAble, Kat now finds it much easier to communicate with Bastian; frustration has been dramatically reduced, and Bastian has been able to get his voice heard, and join in the conversation.
